Why Local Food and Food Co-ops?:

Websites:

  • Building Social Capital Through Cooperative Markets -  Elon Freshman, Anna LoPresti and Erin Keim were challenged in their Global Experience class to research a global problem they were passionate about, and then use this research to take action towards a solution. Discussions led to their common interest in the topic of social capital erosion.
Because this is such a broad issue, they were overwhelmed by the thought of a solution feasible for two college students until Eric Henry visited campus and presented Company Shops Market and the idea of a Co-op. They had always shopped at Co-ops back home, but never understood the extent to which they build community and ultimately the social capital they are trying to promote. Anna and Erin compiled their research into a website to inform people about social capital and the importance of preserving it through efforts like Cooperative Business. Check-out their site!
  • storyofstuff.com - Ever wonder about our culture of consumption and obsession with large scale economic growth? This video provides a quick and dirty history on how these concepts have come to shape our lives and how “green” and “more with less” and “local” can help us change course.

  • Buying green produce with Marion Nestle - "This week on TreeHuggerTV we are back in the supermarket shopping with nutriton expert Marion Nestle. This week we're in the fruit and veg aisle and Marion is lamenting the fact that lack of labelling means we can't tell where the apples come from. This is especially frustrating when they are out of season because we can't tell how far round the world they've travelled. Come help us carry the shopping basket and learn more about the pros and cons of selecting organic fruit and vegetables in the supermarket. " -  Treehugger.com
